Brexit, the law and parliamentCherish democracy, abolish House of Lords

The House of Lords voted on Wednesday, 1st March, to add an amendment to the Government's bill for triggering Article 50, initiating Britain’s exit from the European Union. The amendment was to protect the rights of EU nationals to allow them to remain in the UK after Brexit no matter what the fate of British nationals living in Europe. It is thought that the Government intended to use the EU nationals as bargaining chips to protect the rights of British citizens living in Europe.

Of course everyone did talk about them because they were the more interesting subjects, and they represented something meaningful if things were becoming pedestrian conversationally. These subjects can more often than not be the safe options these days. So what's happened to gut these topics of their power to excite the emotions?

The Brexit vote in June 2016 in favour of Leaving the EU has had a fabulous impact on politics in the UK, rejecting the practise that previously aloof institutions could treat the electorate as a blob to be managed rather than represented. For the last couple of decades politics has been increasingly narrow and mangerial with very little programatic difference between Labour, coalition and Conservative governments.

Alternative FactsWhat is the truth about alternative facts?

A protest took place in Manchester on Saturday, and other UK cities, for people to express their objection to the recent appointment of 45th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump. The Manchester protest was not a massive gathering, maybe only a few hundred people in attendance, but perhaps expressing a sentiment held by many more. Amongst the many Socialist Worker Banners that read ‘No to racism, No to Trump’ were some signs with variations of ‘No such thing as alternative facts’ and ‘You are entitled to your own OPINIONS, but you’re not entitled your own FACTS!
